Standby does not, as it happens, require MagSafe, though MagSafe is far more convenient.

I’ve never gotten around to splurging on a MagSafe dock, because I have abundant cables and they’re fine.

Once connected to lighting and on a traditional stand (or propped up), standby works just fine!
